Young, Singular Sensations

Contributed by Christopher Jones

boysThere wasn’t a lot of room to move around at the Canadian Children’s Dance Theatre this afternoon as an open call audition got underway for boys to play Billy Elliot in the upcoming Mirvish Productions version of the Tony Award winning Billy Elliot The Musical. At least the boys and their stage moms (and a few dads) didn’t have to wait on the street in the rain.

Pictured (left to right) are Billy hopefuls Michael Murphy, 13, Andy Reid, 12 and Robbie Graham-Kuntz, 13, who were calmly waiting to sign-in for the 12:30 pm call. The lads are already stage veterans having shared the role of Kurt in the Toronto production of The Sound of Music, another Mirvish entry. None of the boys betrayed any hint of nerves: “We’ve all been to lots of auditions,” said Michael. “You have to just be yourself,” chimed Andy and Robbie. The show is scheduled to open in Toronto in February 2011.
