My CMF: What a Weekend!

After hearing seeing 20 different new bands over the past four days I’ve come to the conclusion that the live music scene in Toronto is alive and well, no longer eclipsed by the trendy DJ’s and club scene.  And the sizable contingent of Toronto bands represented at Canadian Music Fest proves it. Here are a few of my highlights . . .

Favorite new band – hands down, Delhi 2  Dublin, above (March 11 @ Revival).  With a spunky, spitfire Celtic fiddler who seemed to be fueled by jumping jelly beans, paired with the hypnotic sounds of the dohl drummer, this fusion group from Vancouver represents an exciting new trend, blending cultural traditions with youthful energy resulting in hip-shaking danceable rhythms.

chininjetiFavorite new solo project – Chin Injeti (March 13 @ Czehoski).  Founding member of Bass is Base and former Toronto resident, Chin Injeti, possesses a rich voice that can launch into a perfect MJ falsetto at any given moment.  Since moving to Vancouver he’s been producing and working with everyone from Dr. Dre, Nas, Talib Kweli, Busta Rhymes, Clipse to Esthero, Kinnie Starr, Hot Hot Heat, Bedouin Soundclash and Zaki Ibrahim just to name a few.  Let’s hope Chin comes with a full live band next time he’s touring through town.

Favorite new venue – The Garrison at 1197 Dundas West.  With wide open spaces, a decent sound system, and adventurous programming from hip hop stalwart Cadence Weapon (March 11) to unknown first timers First Rate People (also March 11) to alternative rock “it boys” Metz (March 12), The Garrison joins the burgeoning Dundas/Ossington music scene, which includes the Painted Lady, the Dakota and more.

Least favorite new venue – Czehoski at 678 Queen Street West.  There’s a tiny stage in the back room with a minimal sound system; no bar service, just meal service in the back. And space for less than 100 people.  It was overcrowded and confusing.  Majority of people sitting were there to eat at the restaurant, not to hear the music.  And so many people standing that it was impossible to see the performers.

Why weren’t the  Cameron House and Dakota Lounge on the CMF itinerary? It’s not as if they lack strong Canadian music programming. And why were Alicia Keys and Robin Thicke included on the carte? Just because they’re performing in Toronto during Canadian Music Week?  It’s not as if your wristband gets you into Air Canada Centre for free!

Music lovers have been treated to more than 700 bands over these past five days, the largest gathering of musicians in the country.  Hope you had a chance to hear some of them.

Life-long music lover Natasha Emery started UpBeat Entertainment in 1992 providing music management services for Canadian reggae, world and folk music artists.
