Members of the arts community were out in force at City Hall today to cheer as Mayor Rob Ford proclaimed this National Ballet Week in Toronto, a recognition of the launch of the company’s 60th anniversary season. Artistic Director Karen Kain graciously accepted the proclamation and noted that about 300 National Ballet of Canada alumni will be at the Four Season Centre for the Performing Arts on Wednesday when the curtain rises on the premier of the company’s new Romeo and Juliet, created by internationally celebrated choreographer Alexei Ratmansky. Kain presented the Mayor with a copy of Passion to Dance, James Neufeld’s lavish new chronicle of the history of the National Ballet.

Many City Councillors were in attendance and joined the Mayor and Kain for a post proclamation photo op. Pictured above from left are Councillor’s Kristyn Wong-Tam (Ward 27), Josh Matlow (Ward 22), Michael Thompson (Ward 37), the Mayor, Kain, Gary Crawford (Ward 36) and Mary Fragedakis (Ward 29).
The Councillors spent part of the morning meeting with arts representatives who descended on City Hall as part of the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts’s (TAPA) second annual Arts Day at the City.
Said TAPA’s Executive Director Jacoba Knaapen, “We are very pleased to be extending our reach to include arts workers and private sector partners this year and working together in partnership with Friends of the Arts effectively representing thousands of artists from across the city.” (Friends of the Arts is a network of arts supporters including Arts Vote Toronto, Arts Etobicoke, BeautifulCity.ca, Business for the Arts, Creative Trust, Lakeshore Arts, Scarborough Arts, Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts, Toronto Arts Foundation and Urban Arts.)
